Scoring system
DPMYC uses the low-point system. Low-point scoring is a system in the Racing Rules of Sailing where all the boats in each race of the series score the same number of points as their finishing place in the race, so that the first boat to cross the finish line gets one point, the second two points, etc.
Spring & Fall Series Scoring System
Our type of series is not explained anywhere in the RRS and if you get the Model Yachting magazine you will see that the recent issue explained 8 different scoring systems used none are perfect all have good and bad points.
Because we have throw outs on the daily sailing (1 after 4 races, 2 after 8 races,3 after 16 races, etc) and the series we only count the best 5 of 8 we have to score them slightly different. The daily scoring we only count the boats sailing that day and the weekly score for that day includes all boats in the series.
This year’s scoring system will be a low point system similar to last year’s with one minor change. Last year anyone not sailing a particular Sunday would be scored 2 more than the number of boats sailing that day, if 5 boats sailed anyone not sailing would receive 2 more than last place or 7 for the day. If 10 boats sailed anyone not sailing that day would get 2 more than last place or 12 points for the day, in counting the best 5 some skippers used scores when they were absent over scores when they sailed, this was not the intent of the scoring system.
The appendix A of the RRS states that anyone who sails in one race will be scored for the entire series and anyone missing a race will be scored 1 more than the total entries in the series. Our series normally has about 13 different skippers entered and usually about 9 on any day. If we go according to the RRS anyone missing a day would get 13 (because we have 13 skippers in the series) plus 1 or 14 for every race day they miss. At the meeting some people felt this was too harsh a score for missing the day, it was agreed that the score would be 1 more than the largest fleet in the series which last year was 9.
The score for missing a week may change many times during the series until we hit a maximum number. Because we use a low point system every skipper needs a score every week, so any skippers missing the first week will get a score of 1 more than the size of the fleet that day, If 5 skippers races on day 1 anyone missing will get a score of 6. On week 2 if 8 skippers sail anyone not sailing will get a score of 9, plus I’ll go back to week 1 and change the score of anyone missing from 6 to 9 and I’ll have to do this until we reach a maximum number of boats sailed in a week.
Anyone who’s confused I’ll try to explain it to you at the pond.
